History

The original Woodbine racetrack was in operation from 1874 through to 1993, but its name was transferred to the current Woodbine track in 1956. The current Woodbine was known as 'The New Woodbine Track' until 1963. The original racetracks name was changed to Greenwood raceway or racetrack depending on the type of meets taking place there. Before the Greenwood track closed, the 2 standard and 2 thoroughbred meets that were held there were transferred to Woodbine Racetrack. Before this, Woodbine had been used purely for thoroughbred racing.

Woodbine is the only track in North America that is able to hold thoroughbred and standard-bred racing on the same day.

The Canadian horse Racing Hall of Fame is located at Woodbine.

Facilities

The EP Taylor turf track is used for thoroughbred racing only and is 1 and a half miles long. The Taylor track and the main dirt track at Belmont Park in Long Island are the only 1 and a half mile courses in North America.

Along the inside of the EP Taylor track is the Polytrack course also for thoroughbreds. This is a 1 mile oval shaped course.

Inside the dirt course is the standard-bred course which is set of crushed limestone.

Woodbine is situated on about 650 acres of land, there are 1860 stables on site, as well as a number of normal and pony barns.

Seating capacity at Woodbine is about 12 000 but the largest crowd ever recorded at Woodbine was 42 243.
