Will the Iroquois Stakes Yield a Worthy Winner - 10-31-08

October 31 - This Saturday will see the 27th running of the $100,000 Iroquois Stakes (Gr 3) for two-year-old colts and geldings at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, although the big question many horseracing fans will be asking themselves is if a worthy winner will emerge from this year's eight-horse field.

Over the years the Iroquois Stakes has earned itself a reputation as a race that often succeeds in showcasing some of the country's most promising two-year-olds. However, Saturday's arguably lack luster field has many punters wondering if any of the entrants have what it takes to shine in the 1 mile dirt race.

In terms of career accomplishments amongst the field, they are few and far between and go only so far as the odds stakes placing or allowance win. On the up side though, the fact that the runners may be pretty much equally matched in their accomplishments may make for an exciting and unpredictable race.

As such fans of the Iroquois Stakes will have their work cut out for them as they try to figure out which of the eight contenders will come out tops. Most probably top of their betting lists will be Casey's on Call, who has the distinction of being unbeaten in two races, including a recent Keeneland allowance.

Then there is Capt. Candyman Can, who went into the recent Arlington-Washington Futurity as the race favorite, but was unfortunately beaten. Brave Victory should not be ruled out after putting in a fairly solid performances a couple of races ago to become a maiden winner at Belmont Park in New York.

Gresham impressed his connections with a third place in the Kentucky Cup Juvenile, while Star of David also managed a third place over turf at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada in the Summer Stakes (Gr 3) not too long ago. Monty's Best will be ridden by champion jockey Robby Albarado.

The remaining two contenders are gelding Just Like Biscuit and Chilliness who will be ridden by Jamie Theriot. Come Saturday at Churchill Downs it'll be interesting to see which of the eight wins, and just how impressively. The Iroquois Stakes is scheduled as race 10 on the 11-race Stars of Tomorrow program.
