Wasted Tears

Wasted Tears Tears it up in John C Mabee - 08-16-10

August 16 - Although a potential comeback victory was anticipated from Gozzip Girl in Sunday's $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes (Gr 2) at Del Mar Racecourse in California, it was Wasted Tears who crossed the line first in the 1 1/8 mile outing.

The victory was Wasted Tears' impressive seventh in a row, and further cemented her reputation as one of America's best 5-year-old mares, after she pretty much led the turf race from start to finish and held off a couple of challenges along the way.

Starting from post one, jockey Rajiv Maragh made sure that Wasted Tears snatched an early lead an set a quick pace. And when challenged coming into the second turn, the mare responded with just enough to keep her eager challengers at bay.

She did the same in the midstretch and in the deep stretch until she just made it across the line first in a time of 1:47.35, paying $4.20 to punters who backed her. She finished a short nose ahead of Lilly Fa Pootz in second and Gotta Have Her in third.

Fans of Wasted Tears are no stranger to the mare's winning strategy of keeping her rivals close right up until the end. Said a tired but pleased Maragh after the race, 'She kind of waits on horses. She seems to like them breathing down her neck.'

Wasted Tears' winning streak includes five graded stakes, including the Jenny Wiley at Keeneland. As such, her trainer B B Evans said he would like to take her to Keeneland in October for the First Lady Stakes, which could be her first Gr 1 win.

Meanwhile, Gozzip Girl, who has not won a race since she romped home first in last year's American Oaks, finished sixth out of seven runners, which cast doubt over whether the 4-year-filly still has what it takes to win or whether she is past it.
