War Pass Fails Badly In Tampa Bay Derby - 03-17-08
March 17 - There is no such thing in horse racing as a betting certainty and War Pass definitely proved as much in Sunday's Tampa Bay Derby. The Nick Zito trained champion two-year-old was widely expected to start as the 2008 Kentucky Derby favorite, and he was meant to romp home yesterday starting at odds of 1/20. Instead he finished stone last and threw the Triple Crown Power Rankings into complete turmoil!
Even more perplexing than the egg laid by War Pass is the fact that he came back from the race with no immediately noticeable problems. Zito was mystified reporting that the colt was scoped and checked from head to hoof but there was nothing physically wrong with him. He was in trouble after six furlongs, and was not persisted with over the last 200m finishing last.
The Show payouts for the race were insane. The winner, Big Truck, paid 8/1 for the win but returned 25/2 odds for the show pool with War Pass dropping right out.
Z Fortune was another odds-on favorite who did his Kentucky Derby chances no good at all this weekend with a poor run in the Rebel Stakes. His fifth placed finish also puts Pyro's credentials in doubt, since Z Fortune was fancied due to his previous runner-up effort in the Risen Star Stakes to Pyro.
