Visionaire To Face Pyro In Blue Grass Stakes - 03-13-08
March 13 - Team Valor has a genuine 2008 Kentucky Derby contender on their hands this year in Visionaire, who impressed us in winning the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct. His next race will give a clear picture as to his Triple Crown hopes because he looks set to face Pyro, who also looked good in winning the Louisiana Derby and who beat Visionaire the last time they met.
Pyro has won both his starts as a three-year-old but still races very much in the shadow of his juvenile nemesis War Pass who beat him three times last season. But the Louisiana Derby win was full of merit as he dispatched a highly-touted field and confirmed that he is still improving with every race.
Visionaire earned a big 98 Beyer for his win in the New York fog, closing to win on a sloppy track that had favored speed all day long. The horse who finished second, Texas Wildcatter, also ran a good race, losing in the last stride, and cannot be written off just yet.
Pyro beat Visionaire in the Risen Star Stakes (Grade 3) but the latter certainly had his fair share of excuses that day, not least of all the lack of pace. We feel that Polytrack might suit this horse down to a tee and it would not be surprising to see Visionaire turn the tables at Keeneland. Whether he can go on to win the Kentucky Derby is another matter, and as with nearly all the possible 2008 Triple Crown contenders it is still too early to tell.
