Vision Could Come True in Prince of Wales Stakes - 06-17-09
June17 - Today's prestigious 450,000 pound Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr 1) at Royal Ascot Racecourse in England will no doubt deliver plenty of high octane horseracing action, especially considering top quality French runner, Vision d'Etat, is one of the well-backed favorites and is proven over 1 1 /4 miles.
Trained by French trainer, Eric Libaud, Vision d'Etat cemented his reputation as 'big race contender' last year when he won the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1) - which is also known as the French Derby - at Chantilly. In April this year, he dazzled yet again with an easy victory in the Prix Ganay (Gr 1) at Longchamp.
Ahead of today's big race, many punters will no doubt wager on the formidable French thoroughbred, who is reportedly in top form. Highly-rated French jockey Olivier Peslier has crossed the English Channel to ride the four-year-old stallion today who, during his career, has won over 830,000 pounds in purses.
However, this year's Prince of Wales's Stakes has attracted a few other formidable runners who could give Vision d'Etat a run for his money. The most formidable of these is Tartan Bearer, who won the 2008 Dante Stakes (Gr 2) at York, and narrowly lost to New Approach in the Epsom Derby in the same year.
After recovering from an infection, Tartan Bearer made a welcome return to racing in April this year in a 10 furlong outing at Sandown Racecourse, where he delivered a speedy and strong winning turn. As such, if there is a single horse that can take down Vision d'Etat today, it could well be Tartan Bearer.
That said, fellow French runner Never On Sunday should not be discounted after finishing his 2008 season in fine style. He ran home first in the Prix du Prince d'Orange (Gr 3) at Longchamp in September, beating the quick Trincot. And in May this year, he won the Prix d' Ispahan (Gr 1), also at Longchamp.
Other runners in today's Prince of Wales's Stakes include Virtual, who has a good wins-to-runs ratio, but is not fond of fast ground; Tazeez, who has reportedly improved since his previous outing in France; Trincot, a longshot that could go either way; Twice Over; and Estejo, who could be out of his depth.
