Uncle T Seven Wins Ashley T Cole Stakes - 09-13-10

September 13 - The recent Saratoga meet was not kind to trainer John Kimmel, with only 1 win from 41 starts, however, his luck changed on Sunday at Belmont, when his charge Uncle T Seven won the $100,000 Ashley T. Cole Stakes.

The trainer sported a smile for the first time in months when 4-year-old Uncle T Seven romped home first in the 1 1/2 mile race in New York. The win was the colt's first win from four starts this year and fifth from eighteen career starts.

Under champion jockey Julien Leparoux, Uncle T Seven started the Ashley T. Cole from post 7 and quickly settled into fifth place behind early leaders Spa City Fever and Writingonthewall, followed by Pocket Cowboys and Gimme Credit.

Coming up to the quarter pole, Leparoux had moved Uncle T Seven up into position and at the top of stretch swung him wide and asked him for more. The thoroughbred responded with a burst of speed that saw him cruise up up the field.

By the sixteenth pole, the 4-year-old son of Freud swooped past leaders Pocket Cowboys and Gimme Credit to cross the line first, covering the race in a time of 1:13.40. Pocket Cowboy and Gimme Credit finished in second and third.

Said a thrilled Kimmel after the race, 'That was really nice. We anticipated some pace up front and the instructions were basically to sit behind the speed, and then make a run at them and hope they came back, and that's what happened.'

Kimmel will be hoping that the victory - on the first day of the Belmont Park fall meet- will be the first of many. As for Uncle T Seven, the trainer said he was considering the colt for the $100,000 Mohawk Handicap on October 23.
