UK Gets First New Racecourse In 81 Years - 04-18-08
April 18 - Britain has a new racecourse, the first in 81 years! Great Leighs, which is situated in Essex has been given the green light to start racing.
The British Horse Racing Authority inspected the racecourse on Thursday and gave the go-ahead for racing to start on Sunday. BHA spokesman, Paul Struthers said that there was some minor prep work that needed to be done, but unless something major happened between now and Sunday, racing would go ahead as planned. Declarations for the fixtures on Sunday were now open.
The first few races at the all-weather track will be by invitation only as officials need to assess the infrastructure. The racecourse was supposed to open in October 2006, but a number of delays slowed progress down quite drastically. A new opening date was set for March of this year, which was again delayed but this time due to bad weather.
Great Leighs Racecourse will be open for public racing from 28 May.
