Tykie Two

Southwell Racecourse

Tykie Two Stuns at Southwell with 100 to 1 Win - 05-22-08

May 22 - For the punters at Southwell Racecourse in Rolleston, England on Tuesday either lucky enough or shewd enough to bet on rank outsider, Tykie Two, Christmas came early as the four-year-old filly left the field behind to win the Southwell Racecourse For Conferences Handicap.

With bookies touting odds of between 100 to 1 and even 125 to 1 against, perhaps Tykie Two was offended enough to switch on her jet engines and leave her less than impressive form behind, as she and her jockey, Liam Jones, hurtled down the track to finish ahead of the other 13 starters.

Jones managed to get Tykie Two out in the front and lead the way for at least two furlongs up until she finished a good length and three-quarters ahead of second place finisher, Wizard Looking, whose magic was clearly not strong enough to catch Tykie Two.

Interestingly, Tykie Two failed to make the first three out of seven previous starts, which makes her win even more surprising to all. However, it was a welcome and impressive win noneheless, particularly for her shocked and probably relieved Shropshire trainer, Steve Wynne.

Said Jones after the race, 'Steve Wynne told me to make a lot of use of her as she is a galloper, and that's just what I did. I didn't think the field would catch me and while some might say we were going a little to quick, I was comfortable from the start.'

The other upset during Southwell Racecourse For Conferences Handicap took place when Irish apprentice rider, Martin Harley, was banned for eight days for careless riding on Muskatsturm, which finished unplaced.
