Two Thousand Guineas Stakes |
|
The Two Thousand Guineas Stakes is a thoroughbred, Group 1 flat horse race, and it is one of the two major English classic races, the other being the Derby at Epsom. The race is open to 3-year-olds and takes place over a distance of a mile (eight furlongs). The race is held at Newmarket over the straight Rowley Mile and usually ends in a cavalry charge with runners spread right across the track.
The first Two Thousand Guineas Stakes was in 1809 and gets its name from the original purse of 2,000 guineas.
Fillies are permitted to take place in the race but rarely do these days.
