Two Big Races for Singapore in May - 04-29-09
April 29 - On Sunday May 17, horseracing fans in Singapore will be treated to two of the nation's biggest races at Kranji Racecourse - the $3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup (Gr 1) and the $1 million KrisFlyer International Sprint (Gr 1) - which always attract top local and international runners.
Hosted by the Singapore Turf Club, each of the races seems to have drawn some impressive thoroughbreds. Expected to start in the Singapore Airlines International Cup is top Australian runner Pompeii Ruler, who won last weekend's prestigious 2000m Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.
Great South African thoroughbred and reigning SAIC title holder Jay Peg, who is trained by Herman Brown, will make a welcome return to Kranji Racecourse to defend his title. Fellow South African trainer Mike De Kock has his SAIC hopes set on his talented charge, Bankable, who is reportedly in fine form.
Another SAIC starter, Presvis, proved triumphant on Sunday April 26 in the 2000m Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong. Trained by England-based trainer Luca Cumani, Presvis will offer his trainer an opportunity to win his second SAIC, his first one being back in 2001 with Endless Hall.
Brazilian runner Gloria de Campeao is also expected to start in the SAIC under the guidance of French trainer Pascal Bary. The last time the six-year-old raced was on March 28 this year, when she ran home second in the coveted 2000m Dubai World Cup (Gr 1) not far behind talented race winner, Well Armed.
Top KrisFlyer International Sprint contenders are expected to include reigning KrisFlyer Sprint and Australian champion Takeover Target, who on April 18 notched up a memorable win in the T.J. Smith Stakes (Gr 1) at Randwick. Respectable Hong Kong runners Sacred Kingdom and Inspiration will also start.
European contenders Prime Defender, trained by Barry Hills, and Madame Trop Vite, trained by Kevin Ryan, will also tackle the KrisFlyer. Leading South African trainer Sean Tarry has entered his gutsy charge Mythical Flight, while Godolphin Racing will be represented by their formidable runner, Diabolical.
