Triple Crown Top Contender Will Miss Santa Anita Derby - 04-03-08
April 3 - Georgie Boy who is thus far undefeated this season will be unable to race on Saturday in the 2008 Santa Anita Derby. Kathy Walsh, the veteran Santa Anita based trainer said that he has pulled a back muscle.
Georgie Boy who is owned by George Schwary worked exceptionally hard on Saturday, running six furlongs in 1:12 2/5 which turned out to be the fastest out of 14 works at the same distance. He unfortunately came out of the work with a back injury.
"It's high on his back end and we don't know how long it will take [to heal], but we're not going to take a chance" Walsh told the media.
The vet took x-rays and luckily the injury is not serious enough to require surgery, but it means that Georgie Boy will be missing both the Santa Anita Derby and the Kentucky Derby. Walsh said that she would not let him run the Kentucky Derby without a prep race; bad luck for the horse who has won the San Vicente Stakes and San Felipe Stakes already this year, and the Del Mar Futurity last year. He may be out of racing until the Pacific Classic in August.
Georgie Boy and El Gato Malo were both tipped to be favorites for the $750 000 Santa Anita Derby.
