Triple Crown contenders

Triple Crown 2008 Top Contenders Updated - 02-26-08

February 26 - This weekend taught all the 2008 Triple Crown analysts at least one vital nugget of information: Nick Zito holds many of the good cards at this early stage. Not only did War Pass confirm his number one ranking with an excellent three-year-old debut, but another Zito inmate Cool Coal Man entered the rankings on the strength of a big win in the Fountain Of Youth Stakes on the same day at the same track.

Two other Zito runners, Fierce Wind and Anak Nakal (who drops out of our rankings following a disappointing effort in the Fountain Of Youth) are also still in the Derby picture, but the two runners who won at Gulfstream Park look very good right now.

Here are the latest Triple Crown Power Rankings:

1. War Pass Hacked up on seasonal debut. Needs a tougher challenge but earned a solid 97 Beyer.

2. Pyro Risen Star Stakes (G3) winner should show his class in the Louisiana Derby (G2).

3. Cool Coal Man Earned a 98 Beyer and beat a good field in the Fountain Of Youth Stakes. That was impressive.

4. Georgie Boy San Vicente Stakes (G2) winner needs to prove that he can stay the Derby distance.

5. El Gato Malo Three time winner from as many races, one cannot ask for more so far.

6. Court Vision Finished a decent third in the Fountain Of Youth, and closed late to suggest he'd prefer extra ground.

7. Crown of Thorns Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) winner is expected to run in the Sham Stakes.

8. Tale of Ekati 4th in the Breeders' Cup last season, and definitely one to watch out for this year.

9. Denis of Cork Won the Southwest Stakes (G3). Will put his unbeaten record on the line in the Rebel Stakes.

10. Into Mischief 2nd in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) but already a Grade 1 winner as a juvenile.
