Trio of Derby Dashers to Feature at Churchill Downs - 06-13-08
June 13 - If there's one thing that Kentucky horseracing fans love, it's a
Kentucky Derby horse, and at Churchill Downs racecourse tomorrow (Saturday, June
14th), they'll have the opportunity to watch three Derby horses compete in the
Northern Dancer Stakes (Grade 3).
All three of the horses, Recapturetheglory, Pyro, and Visionaire, ran in this
year's Kentucky Derby, and as such are the among the betting favorites
for tomorrow's $175,000 Northern Dancer Stakes, an undercard to the prestigious
$1 million Stephen Foster Handicap (Grade 1).
The three Derby runners will join four other 3-year-olds at the starting gate
for the 1 1/16-mile race.
Recapturetheglory, a 49 to 1 long shot at the Kentucky Derby, managed a
not-too-shabby fifth place. However, scheduled to run at the Peakness Stakes in
late May, the colt got a fever and his trainer, Louie Roussel, decided it would
be best to send him back to his home stables in Chicago to recover. He was
transported back to Churchill Downs yesterday for tomorrow's race, where he'll
be ridden by veteran jockey, E.T. Baird.
Pyro, who finished 8th in the Kentucky Derby, has undergone a strenuous
training regime since the Derby and looks as though he may be in better shape
for tomorrow's Northern Dancer Stakes. Trainer, Steve Asmussen, admitted that he
was disappointed with Pyro's performance at the Derby, but was confident the
colt would have a better season from here on out. Pyro will be ridden by his
regular jockey, Shaun Bridgmohan.
Visionaire finished in a disappointing 12th place at the Kentucky
Derby, and has been criticized for lacking competitive speed. However,
Visionaire has a history of rallying and moving up the field from far behind the
leaders, a quality which may stand the 3-year-old in good stead for tomorrow.
His trainer, Michael Matz, has elected to couple him with jockey, Garrett Gomez.
It will be interesting to see how these three thoroughbreds fare. The Northern
Dancer Stakes kicks off tomorrow at 4:49 pm ET.
