Top SA Jockey to lead Rest of the World in Shergar Cup - 07-15-10
July 15 - Anton Marcus, one of South Africa's premier jockeys, has been named captain of the 'Rest of the World' team that will compete in the 2010 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on August 7 at Ascot Racecourse in England.
Marcus, who is currently leading South Africa's jockey championships, gained global recognition when he romped home first aboard South Africa-bred runner, Jay Peg, in the 2008 Dubai Duty Free Stakes (Gr 1) in the UAE.
Known in South Africa by his nickname 'Superman', Marcus will lead the team comprising himself, Yasunari Iwata, one of Japan's top jockeys and winner of the 2006 Melbourne Cup, and up-and-comer Luke Nolen of Australia.
The European team will be captained by Italian-born champion jockey Frankie Dettori, and will comprise himself, Umberto Rispoli of Italy, and either Olivier Peslier of France or Christophe Soumillon of Belgium.
The riders in the respective Great Britain and Ireland teams are yet to be announced. The 2010 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup consists of six races and is traditionally Ascot's best attended event, outside of the Royal Meeting.
Said Ascot Head of Communications and International Racing, Nick Smith, 'We are delighted to have secured the participation of two highly experienced, established stars in the form of Anton Marcus and Yasunari Iwata.
'The 2010 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will provide a great opportunity for some of the world's top jockeys to showcase their talents in the UK, and we are looking forward to a great contest next month.'
