Top SA Horses To Race In Cox Plate - 05-05-08
May 5 - Jay Peg, Mourilyan and Argonaut will be taking part in this year's $3m Tatts Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Their trainers will be hoping they fare a great deal better than did Maraca and Gray's Inn, 2 South African entries who were both very well beaten when they took part in the Cox Plate.
Jay Peg is seen as the top of the trio. He won the Dubai Duty Free this year and won 2 Group 1 races in SA last year before he was transferred to Herman Brown's yard.
Greg Carpenter, Victoria chief handicapper says that Jay Peg would be a great competitor in the race as he likes to 'race on the speed', which is exactly the style of racing at Monee Valley. Talking of Brown, he has also indicated that he is going to send Marilyn in for the Cox Plate. Marilyn formerly from Ireland came 8th in his most recent start in the Dubai Sheena Classic. He has however won twice in Dubai in distances of 2400m.
Argonaut who has been transferred to the Lee Freedman stable has won 3 of his 4 starts. Phil Campbell who recently bought a 50% share of Argonaut says that he runs a very strong 2000m and because of that they are really excited to send him to the Cox Plate. Argonaut has had 2 very good wins at Group 1 level over 1400m and 1600m.
At the moment, the early favourite for the race is Weekend Hussler.
