Top Aussies Horses Set for Dubai Racing Season - 06-14-09
June 14 - HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Darley is one of the world's most foremost global racehorse breeding operations which stands stallions in six countries, including Australia, giving His Highness the luxury to pluck the best and have them sent to compete in Dubai under the Godolphin banner.
As proof of this, nine top Australian Darley runners will shortly embark on the long journey to the United Arab Emirates, where they'll be prepped for some of the most prestigious and lucrative races in the world. The pick of bunch is no doubt Sousa, who triumphed in the 2008 Spring Champion Stakes in Sydney.
Sousa's impressive six length victory in the Spring Champion Stakes in October was the first Gr 1 win for top-rated Australian trainer Peter Snowden for Sheikh Mohammed. As such, His Highness will undoubtedly be eager to see what the talented colt can do next year in races such as the 2010 Dubai World Cup.
The formidable colt will be joined by other quality horses including Imvula, Marching, El Cambio, Desuetude, Aichi, Fravashi and Caymans, all of whom will be aimed at the 2010 Dubai World Cup carnival in March. The carnival will be held for the first time at Dubai's new multi-billion dollar Meydan Racecourse.
Another impressive Aussie galloper that will experience the dry Dubai desert air is Time Thief, who is trained by Lee Freedman on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed. Bought as yearling for AUD$2 million at the Inglis Australian Easter Sale, Freedman has turned the colt into a real contender, after he won his debut in 2008.
Said John Ferguson, bloodstock adviser to Sheikh Mohammed, 'Sheikh Mohammed's decision to race nine graduates from Peter Snowden and Lee Freedman's stables on the world stage is a huge compliment to everybody associated with racing our team in Australia, from Peter and Lee to their stable staff.'
Continued Ferguson, 'The fact that these horses are destined for greatness in Dubai is a verification that the Australian racehorses are among the best in the world. Their first target will be the 2010 Meydan World Cup meeting in Dubai, followed by Royal Ascot and other big events around the world next year.'
