Trainer Profile |
Todd Pletcher |
Todd Pletcher was born on the 26th of June 1967 in Texas. The Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer of the Year has been his 3 times in a row, and in purse earnings he was top of the board in 2004, 2005, 2006, and shattered the record for most money ever earned by a USA trainer in 2007 (breaking his own record).
He started out as a hot walker for his father Jake Pletcher when he was only 7 years old. Whilst studying towards a degree in Animal Science he worked as a groom. When he graduated he moved to New York to work as a foreman for D. Wayne Lukas. He was promoted in 1991 to assistant trainer. In 1995 he took out his trainer's license.
His first winner, Majestic Number came in 1996 and that was just the beginning of the winning streak for Pletcher. He broke the most stakes won record in North America when Scat Daddy won the Champagne Stakes. That win was his 93rd stakes win which was made up of 17 Grade 1 victories and 52 graded events.

In 2007 Rags to Riches became the first filly since 1905 to win the Belmont Stakes and somewhat surprisingly, considering his domination of US racing over the pasyt four years, this vcitory earned Pletcher his first ever Triple Crown win. He has come agonizingly close to winning the Kentucky Derby, which is the one race he probably wants to win the most.
In 2004 Pletcher was suspended for 45 days after one of his horses tested positive for mepivicaine which numbs pain. |
