Tizway Out Of 2011 Breeders Cup Classic
Author: Marc Weinberg
October 25 - The 2011 Breeders' Cup Classic will not feature Tizway. The six-year old son of Tiznow, who is arguably the best older horse in training in the USA this season, sustained a strain to the suspensory ligament of his left foreleg. He has been retired from racing and will stand at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky.
Tizway won the Metropolitan Handicap as well as the Whitney Handicap this season. He retires with a race record of 7 wins from 20 starts, and career earnings of $1,359,274.
Tizway was the first horse in twenty years to win the Met and the Whitney in the same year. The last horse to achieve this feat was In Excess. His Whitney victory at Saratoga stamped Tizway as the leading older horse on the East Coast, and possibly the best in the country.
Uncle Mo and Havre de Grace remain the leading fancies for this year's Classic. Flat Out, who is next in the morning line odds, was easily held by Tizway on form, and has also lost to Havre de Grace.
It is starting to look like a match race now, as the field lacks depth and any real quality besides the first two in the betting. If So You Think takes his spot he will be an interesting runner, but he has had a really tough campaign in Europe and is unlikely to be at his best here.
