Theriot Astonishes At Keeneland - 04-14-08
April 14 - "We are even surprised he won" are the words of 29-year old jockey Jamie Theriot on the amazing win by Mr Nightlinger at Keeneland this past weekend. Mr Nightlinger won the $125 000 Shakertown Stakes by 1.75 lengths, beating the favourite, Smart Enough in the 5 and a half furlong turf race. This win is the first stakes victory for Mr Nightlinger's trainer W Bret Calhoun. Theriot says that turf conditions are probably what enabled the win, but others are crediting the win to the jockey himself.
Theriot is on a winning streak. He has ridden 9 winners at the Keeneland meet, which puts him only 4 behind the leader who has 13.
Theriot has horse racing in his blood. His father, Harold Theriot was a trainer, his uncle is Larry Melancon is a longtime jockey, Calvin Borel who won the Kentucky Derby and last but not least, Eddie Delahoussave who is a horse racing hall of famer.
He won 4 graded stakes races at Keeneland last year and it looks like this year he is set to do the same. Theriot grew up in Louisiana and has been riding in Kentucky for under 2 years.
