The Travers Stakes

The Travers Stakes is a Grade I Thoroughbred horse race that has been around since 1864. It is held at the beautiful Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, New York and can actually lay claim to be the oldest horse race for thoroughbreds in the US. The race is open to 3-year olds and carries a purse of $1,000,000. The race has been run at four different distances over the years but currently it is contested over 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs).

The race is limited to 3-year-old Colts and geldings. The event is the jewel in the crown of the summer racing season at Saratoga, and since 2006 The Travers has been sponsored by the New York state lottery.

The racecourse is a valuable historic resource and one of the biggest areas of green space in New York. Saratoga Race Course is located near the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Saratoga consists three racetracks: The main track, Mellon Turf and the Turf Course.
