The Summer Cup is run at the Turffontein Racecourse over a distance of 10 furlongs or 2000 meters. The Summer Cup is a Grade 1 race for 3-year-olds and older. It is a competitive handicap and it is held each year in November. The current purse for the race is R1.5 million. The Summer Cup is sponsored by Steinhoff International and is now known as the Steinhoff International Summer Cup.

The winner of the 2007 Summer Cup was longshot Strategic News, who defeated his more fancied rivals to return a whopping R22.50 a win on the tote.

Turffontein

Turffontein Racecourse is situated in the suburb of Turffontein in Johannesburg. The racecourse was founded in 1887 by the Johannesburg Turf club. The facility is home to an inner and outer turf track.

Turffontein racecourse is the major track in the Gauteng and features some of the richest races and most important features in South Africa.

Turffontein is widely acknowledged to be one of the most difficult tracks in South Africa due to the relentless climb from the 1200 meter mark to the final turn. The straight, however, is long and gives good horses the chance to win from any position especially on the outer track.
