Summer Cup Won By Longshot In The Betting - 11-24-07
November 24 - The 2007 Summer Cup results will show an upset winner, but one person who believed in the 20/1 betting longshot was the winning jockey, Glynn Schofield. He was on board Appelate Court in the Victory Moon Handicap (Grade 3) when that horse beat Strategic News by nine lengths the last time they raced. He then opted for the ride on Dylan Cunha's Australian-bred horse - a decision that some blamed his young riding agent for. One wonders if that same agent is now doused in champagne?
The decision to hop on board Strategic News, who paid R22.70 a win on the tote, looks like the smartest move made all year. Schofield's mount overcame a wide draw of 15 to get first run on the field as they entered the straight, and it was good night nurse. He sauntered home by three lengths, with Schofield able to execute a dramatic fist pump as Strategic News sailed past the winning post in an absolute canter.
Natural Selection was tipped by a lot of people to run a big race even though he also had a very poor draw. This is a big race horse who nearly won the July Handicap, and he showed his ability here by holding second place. Nothing else really ran on, with Our Giant a disappointing third. He had every chance under Anton Marcus but wasn't good enough on the day. Apple-A-Day ran a huge race to finish 4th at any price.
Earlier the Dingaans was won by Lion's Blood ahead of Eddington and our pick Kilcoy Castle. As predicted the two unbeaten favourites, Lubricator and JJ The Jet Plane did not factor in the finish.
