The Stephen Foster Handicap is run at Churchill Downs. Churchill Downs The racecourse was officially opened in 1875. The inaugural Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks races were held in the same year. The track was named after two gentlemen by the names of John and Henry Churchill who were generous enough to lease the land to their nephew, Meriwether Clark who went on to become the president of the Louisville Jockey Club which was created in 1874.
Churchill Downs is renowned for its two spire grandstand which was built in 1895 and was assigned the status of a National Historic Landmark in 1986. As well as the track, clubhouse and numerous stables, Churchill Downs houses the Kentucky Derby Museum which has its main focus on the Kentucky Derby and the history of the racetrack.? Churchill Downs was renovated between 2001 and 2005 for the approximate amount of $121 million. The clubhouse was totally redone, 79 suites were built on, and the spires were fully renovated.
