South African Horse Racing Legend Dies - 04-02-08
April 2 - Laurie Jaffee, 85, who only recently returned from an equine shopping trip to New Zealand, lost his brief battle with cancer on Thursday.
Jaffee, who was 85, has been influential in the world of horse racing for over 50 years. He held many top positions, including executive steward of the Jockey Club, chairman of the Johannesburg Turf club, chairman of the Transvaal Racing Club and was a life-long vice-president of both clubs.
Jaffee, who never retired and had incredible zest for life, was a clean-living man, known to enjoy the occasional Johnnie Walker Black Label. He was an enthusiastic mentor to many people in the horse racing industry.
He was thrilled when London News won the 1996 Vodacom Durban July and was ecstatic when London News won the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes at Sha Tin in 1997 saying "Now they know we can breed a serious horse." It was this win that signaled the emergence of South Africa as a world-wide racing power.
Phumelela, who runs racing in the Gauteng and Eastern Cape provinces, is expected to include a memorial race in its calendar to pay tribute to one of South Africa's great horse racing entrepreneurs.
