Short Field Expected in New York Stakes - 06-18-10
June 18 - Even though Saturday's $150,000 New York Stakes (Gr 3) at Belmont Park in New York over 1 1 /4 miles has attracted seven fillies and mares, it is expected to be something of a nail-biter considering its favourites.
Kentucky-bred 4-year-old filly Lady Shakespeare is expected to lead the betting as the 5/2 favourite, followed by 4-year-old filly Ave at 5/2, then 5-year-old mare Daveron at 7/2 and finally 4-year-old filly Gozzip Girl at 4/1.
But for our wager Gozzip Girl is the runner most likely to make the New York Stakes her own. It's true she blew two Gr 1 shots at the end of her season as a three-year-old, but an 8-month layoff seems to have done her wonders.
That is according to her respected trainer Tom Albertrani, who seems to be buzzing with excitement at Gozzip Girl's return to racing tomorrow. 'This is the best I've ever seen her look going into a race,' said a beaming Albertrani.
'She's got good weight on her; last year I had a hard time trying to keep some weight on her. Right now, she's never looked better,' continued the New York trainer. 'I have no doubt that she's fit and ready to go at the moment.'
If the trainer is to be believed and Gozzip Girl has turned over a new leaf as a 4-year-old, betting fans smart enough to back her could end up with a fistful of dollars. Owned by Farnsworth Stables, the filly won four stakes last year.
These include the coveted American Oaks (Gr 1) at Hollywood Park in California. But later in the year in the Garden City Handicap (Gr 1) she could only manage a fourth place, while in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes she finished third.
Here is the complete field and odds for the $150,000 New York Stakes (Gr 3) at Belmont Park:
- Ave (GB) 3/1
- Changing Skies (IRE) 9/2
- Sweet and Flawless (KY) 20/1
- Nehantic Kat (NY) 15/1
- Daveron (GER) 7/2
- Lady Shakespeare (KY) 5/2
- Gozzip Girl (KY) 4/1
