Sha Tin History

Sha Tin Racecourse was constructed on reclaimed land in the New Territories of Sha Tin in 1978, supervised by the command of Sir David Akers-Jones, the Secretary of the time. It initially held a capacity of 35,000 people, making it the bigger of the two tracks in Hong Kong, and boasted a single grandstand.

The highest collection of bets since 2001, took place on 9 September 2007, when a record horde of approximately 60,000 racegoers filled the track, placing US$106 million in bets.

Since Sha Tin boasts many world feats, such as the world's richest day of turf racing, the world's first retractable roof over a parade ring, and the world's longest Diamond Vision Television screen, it's only appropriate that it hosts some of the world's key racing events, such as the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races, Champions Mile, the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup, and the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby. And due to its superlative amenities, the equestrian events in the 2008 Olympics will be hosted at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Horse racing is so significant and esteemed in Hong Kong, and the fans are so moving, that being present at a live race in Hong Kong is such a thrilling event. It can be compared to attending a soccer match in Europe or American Football in the United States. The stands are pack to capacity, reaching crowds of approximately 46,000 per race meet, and for the betting pools to exceed the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Between the two racecourses in Hong Kong - Sha Tin and Happy Valley, the Hong Kong Jockey Club accrues in surplus of $10.4 billion in betting proceeds every year. According to Fortune Magazine, in relation to the 167 thoroughbred racetracks in the United States, they only collectively receive an amount of just over $12 billion per annum.
