The Sam F. Davis Stakes which was
recently given its Gr 3 status, is held every year in February at Tampa
Bay Downs racetrack in Tampa, Florida, USA, and is the main event on
Festival Preview Day, held February 14, 2009. It's an American
Thoroughbred horse race open to three-year olds, and is run on a dirt
track with a distance of 1 1/16 miles, with an impressive winning of
$200,000.
For many years the Sam F. Davis Stakes was seen as no more than a prep
race for the track's namesake event, the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby. But in
recent years, the Kentucky Derby has also been making use of The Davis
as a prep race. And since The Davis has received Gr 3 status, the Tampa
Bay Derby becomes a more feasible opportunity for horsemen trying to
reach the Kentucky Derby this year.
The fastest time documented in the Sam F. Davis stands at 1:44.13, and
was set in 2008 by Fierce Wind, ridden by Cornelio Velasquez and trained
by Nick Zito. The largest winning margin still stands with San Gennaro
set in 1999. He won by 6 3/4 lengths. |
