Ruffian Handicap
|
The Ruffian Handicap is a
Grade 1 thoroughbred flat horse race for three-year-old and older
fillies and mares. Run over a distance of 11/16 miles on a left-handed
dirt track, the Ruffian Handicap is traditionally run at the beginning
of? September every year at the historical Belmont Park in Elmont, New
York.
The Ruffian Handicap was first run in 1976 over 1 1.4 miles
and honored its namesake, Ruffian, a talented and much-prized
Kentucky-bred filly who was inaugurated into the United States National
Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in the same year.
Ruffian won
many races and received many awards and honors during her brilliant but
tragically short career that included Champion Two-Year-Old Filly in
1974, Triple Tiara Champion in 1975 and Champion Three-Year-Old Filly in
1975.
From 1977 to 1989 the Ruffian Handicap was run over 1 1/8
miles and from 1990 to the present it has been run over 1 1/16 miles.
Owners can look forward to a generous purse of $300,000. In 2001 - as a
tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11th - race
organizers cancelled the Ruffian Handicap.
The fastest time ever
recorded in the Ruffian Handicap was 1:40.16 set in 2008 by Tough Tiz's
Sis. Lady's Secret has won the race twice (in 1985 and 1986). Trainers
Robert J. Frankel and Claude R. McGaughey III each have three wins under
their belts, and jockeys Jerry Bailey and Angel Cordero Jr each have
four. |
