Richard Migliore Escapes Spill with Mild Concussion - 01-31-10

January 31 - Last Saturday at Aqueduct Racecourse in New York was business as usual for jockey Richard Migliore right up until the unfortunate moment his charge, Honest Wildcat, broke down sending him flying to the ground and subsequently off to hospital with a concussion.

Fortunately for Migliore his concussion was a mild one and he escaped further injury, which means his doctors will likely clear him to race again on Saturday. Honest Wildcat, however, was not so fortunate, as the injury he suffered to his right foreleg meant he had to be euthanized.

When the 4-year-old colt broke down, he was amongst the leaders at the eighth pole. 'He felt sound so I think it was just one of those freak things,' said Migliore after he watched a replay of the accident. 'I'm lucky I fell to the left, because if I fell forward he would have landed on top of me.'

Following the accident the jockey was transported to North Shore University Hospital, where he was thoroughly checked over for injuries and his concussion was diagnosed. On Wednesday this week Migliore saw a neurologist who did not clear the jockey to ride again until February 6.

'They [doctors] like to wait two weeks generally from when it happens,' said Migliore said. 'I'm a little disappointed because I feel pretty good.' Although the diminutive rider freely admitted that he felt a little 'spacey' on Wednesday, but felt much better by Thursday.

As of Friday, Migliore was ranked 10th in Aqueduct's inner-track meet jockey standings, with 8 victories from 56 rides to his name. At 45, Migliore has racked up an impressive 4,439 career wins and has his sights set on reaching the magic 5,000 mark. 'I still have a lot of riding in me,' he said.
