Lady's Secret Stakes

Rachel Alexandra wins Lady's Secret as Expected - 07-26-10

July 26 - One of the reasons 4-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra was chosen as the 2009 Horse of the Year is her consistency, which she showcased yet again yesterday by winning the Lady's Secret Stakes at Monmouth Park.

As expected, Rachel Alexandra pretty much dominated the 1 1/8 mile race under her regular rider and champion jockey, Calvin Borel, beating six other fillies and mares across the line first in a time of 1:49.78 on a fast track.

Because Rachel Alexandra is a like a priceless car that is only taken out of the garage on special occasions, horse racing fans across America are always eager to find out when she'll run next, so they can tune in to watch her go.

And according to Rachel's connections, which include champion trainer Steve Asmussen and majority owner Jess Jackson, she'll likely strut her stuff in the $300,000 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga Racecourse on August 29.

Of course, being typical horsemen, they have not confirmed the Personal Ensign Stakes as a done deal. This is horse racing and plans change. Asmussen did say, however, that the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic is a potential target.

The Breeders' Cup Classic is one of the biggest and most important races on the U.S. horse racing calendar and is one of the few races that Rachel Alexandra has not yet won. Even her great rival, Zenyatta, won the Classic in 2009.

But that is still a long way away and there are many races between now and the Breeders' Cup. Right now though, Rachel's connections are still soaking up her win in the Lady's Secret, which earned her a 105 Beyer Speed Figure.

She crossed the line three lengths ahead of Queen Martha in second who ran home ahead of Ask the Moon in third.
