Rachel Alexandra Wins 7th Straight - 06-29-09
June 29 - The former owners of Rachel Alexandra who sold the top filly to Jess Jackson and his partners earlier this year must be kicking themselves after she won the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes (Gr 1) at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York on Saturday, her seventh consecutive win in recent weeks.
Unbeatable seems to be how most journalists and horseracing fans are describing the three-year-old these days, after every race she enters results in a victory. And not victories where she wins by a nose, but the kind when she finishes miles ahead. On Saturday, for instance, she won by a record 19 1/4 lengths.
She smashed the previous largest Mother Goose Stakes winning margin of 13 1/2 lengths, set in 1975 by Ruffian. Her winning time of 1:46.33 broke the previous record of 1:46.58 set in 1994 by Lakeway. And, following her triumph on Saturday, Rachel Alexandra's Beyer Speed Figure skyrocketed to 111.
This is three points higher than the figures she earned following her triumphs in this year's Kentucky Oaks and Preakness Stakes. Once again the talented runner showed why she is arguably one of the best fillies in North America. On Sunday morning her connections shipped her to Saratoga in order to regroup.
Said her trainer, Steve Asmussen, 'Right now I'm just going to worry about her health and happiness, and then we'll sit down and decide what's best for her.' According to reports, Rachel Alexandra has been installed in Curlin's old stall at Saratoga, which is right next to the office of assistant trainer, Scott Blasi.
'She shipped great,' said Blasi. 'She seems to have recovered very well from the Mother Goose Stakes on Saturday and was starving when we fed her last night, and ate everything this morning (Sunday). Now that she's been moved into the stall right next to my office, I'll be able to check up on her constantly.'
While Rachel's connections have not said what's next for her, there are many races to choose from. These include the $1 million Delaware Handicap on July 19 at Delware Park, the $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 25 at Belmont Park and the $1 million Haskell Invitational on August 2 at Monmouth Park.
