Rachel Alexander to Run in Mother Goose Stakes - 06-26-09
June 26 - Tomorrow (Saturday, June 27) all eyes will be on this year's awesome Kentucky Oaks and Preakness Stakes winner, Rachel Alexandra, as she competes against a small field of other three-year-old fillies in the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes (Gr 1) at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Rachel Alexandra will go into the 1 1/8 mile race over dirt as the 1-5 favorite, which is not surprising given the talented filly has won each of her last six outings. Winning tomorrow's race will make it seven, and cement her reputation as one of if not the best fillies in America right now.
The most famous of her recent victories was that over heavily-backed Kentucky Derby winner, Mine That Bird, in the Preakness Stakes in May this year at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore. With Calvin Borel aboard, she delivered a dazzling run as she dispatched Mine as well as the rest of the all-male field.
That overwhelming victory will have racing fans and trainers alike wondering how the Mother Goose Stakes' other four fillies will stand up to the seemingly unbeatable filly. Said Mark Hennig, trainer of Florida Oaks winner Don't Forget Gil. 'She (Rachel Alexandra) looks unbeatable, really, with fillies.'
The trainer went on to say that 'Mine That Bird was taking a pretty good run at her (in the Preakness), but we're not running Mine That Bird'. True, which is why if there is an upset on the cards tomorrow, it won't be because Rachel Alexandra crosses the line first, but because one of the other fillies does.
Said Asmussen, 'We have a high level of comfort with her. She's got a wonderful attitude and she looks beautiful on the racetrack. She did get hot Preakness Day, especially right after the race, and we were just monitoring that. This is still a big test of just how much the Preakness Stakes did take out of her.'
As in the Kentucky Oaks and Preakness Stakes, Calvin Borel will be aboard Rachel Alexandra tomorrow, a filly the champion jockey has admitted 'as being the best horse he has ever had the privilege of riding'. The other runners are Don't Forget Gil, Flashing, Malibu Prayer and 30-1 longshot, Hopeful Image.
