Pyro Warming Up For The 2008 Kentucky Derby - 03-09-08
March 9 - The Louisiana Derby field was strong on paper but the betting said that only one horse mattered - Pyro, who started odds on as 4/5 favorite. That came as no surprise to us since we had him pegged as the #2 ranked horse in our soon to be famous Triple Crown Power Rankings. In fact, we predicted that he would win the Louisiana Derby and yesterday he duly obliged.
Pyro came home lonely winning by three lengths but a number of the other highly touted horses disappointed and might want to reroute their journey away from the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Tale of Ekati, who finished sixth, and Majestic Warrior back in seventh did not fire at all. My Pal Charlie who started in the betting at 60-1 set the pace and managed to finish a creditable second.
Pyro will still have to settle for #2 in our rankings, however. War Pass has beat him three times already, and although it is clear that Pyro has improved since those juvenile clashes there is nothing to suggest that he is better than War Pass.
Pyro is expected to have one more prep run before the Kentucky Derby and if he wins that race in the same style that he won the Risen Stakes and yesterday's Derby he will certainly have plenty of supporters at Churchill Downs come the first Saturday in May.
