Proudinsky and Kiss the Kid set for Dixie Stakes - 05-16-09

May 16 - Although most race goers at Pimlico Racecourse today in Baltimore, Maryland will be there for this afternoon's prestigious Preakness Stakes, another race that many will no doubt wager on is the $150,000 Dixie Stakes (Gr 2), in which Proudinsky and Kiss the Kid will be the runners to watch.

Open to three-year-olds and up, the 1 1/8 mile Dixie Stakes is on the undercard to Saturday's Preakness Stakes, and has attracted a large field of 13 horses. Of these, Proudinsky and Kiss the Kid are expected to be the best-backed judging by their recent racing records, along with Strike a Deal and Lauro.

Despite finishing 6th behind Einstein in the $500,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (Gr 1) two weeks ago at Churchill Downs Racecourse in Kentucky, Proudinsky seems to be in decent form. In March this year he won the Mervin Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap (Gr 2) for the second year running.

To his advantage, he will be breaking from barrier 1 in the Dixie Stakes and, despite his highweight of 124 pounds, should make for the front from the get go. Trained by the formidable Bobby Frankel, Proudinsky has been entered alongside stable mate Musketier as part of a coupled entry in the race.

Kiss the Kid, who has won the last three races from four starts, will start the Dixie Stakes from barrier 4. Trained by Amy Tarrant, the 6-year-old most recently thundered home first in the $100,000 Appleton Handicap (Gr 3) and the Fort Lauderdale Handicap earlier this year at Florida's Gulfstream Park.

Top-rated jockey Eibar Coa will be aboard Kiss the Kid in today's Dixie Stakes, and should give Proudinsky a good run for his money. But there are also two other entrants that are worth a look - Strike a Deal and Lauro. Both finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the Red Smith Handicap in NY last year.

Betting fans will be pleased to note that today's Dixie Stakes is the third leg of a $1 million-guaranteed pick four.
