The Prix de l'Opera is an
annual French Grade 1 turf flat horse race for thoroughbred fillies and
mares three years old and older. It is run on the first Sunday in
October at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris over 2000m. It currently
carries a purse of 250,000 euros and attracts runners from all over
Europe.
Inaugurated in 1974, the Prix de l'Opera was classified
as a Gr 2 race and run over a distance of 1850m for three and four year
old fillies. In 1990 however the Prix de l'Opera's was extended to 2000m
and opened to all fillies and mares three years old and older. In 2000
it was reclassified as a Grade 1 race.
Run on the same day each
year as the famous Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the Prix de l'Opera always
attracts strong runners from France and abroad. In 2006 French filly
Mendesha set a new course record over 2000m with a time of 2m 00.9s.
Three jockeys have each won the race three times: Yves Saint-Martin
in 1975 on Sea Sands, in 1977 on Waya and in 1981 on Kilmona. Walter
Swinburn in 1983 on Royal Heroine, in 1985 on Bella Colora and in 1992
on Hatoof. Cash Asmussen in 1986 on Secret Form, 1990 on Colour Chart
and 1998 on Insight.
Top French trainer Criquette Head-Maarek has
celebrated five wins in the Prix de l'Opera - in 1984 with Reine
Mathilde, 1987 with Mona Stella, 1988 and 1989 with Athyka and 1992 with
Hatoof. |
