Prebble Set to Ride Dao Dao in Futurity Stakes - 02-23-10

February 23 - For Aussie-born, but now Hong Kong-based, jockey Brett Prebble, Sunday's race meeting at Sha Tin Racecourse was a bitter sweet affair as he rode four winners only to be suspended for 'careless riding.' However, he has been cleared to ride in Saturday's Futurity Stakes (Gr 1) in Melbourne.

When renowned Australian trainer David Hayes called on Prebble to ride his talented charge Evidentia in the Blue Diamond Stakes last Saturday, he complied. However, the dynamic duo ran out of luck and out of the money, and following the race Prebble returned to Hong Kong in time for Sunday's meet.

But the Melbourne racing fraternity was not through with Prebble just yet, after he was asked by another leading Australian racehorse trainer, John Hawkes of Team Hawkes, to ride his fiery charge, Dao Dao, in the coveted AUD$500,000 Futurity Stakes (Gr 1) at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday.

After Sha Tin race stewards found Prebble guilty of careless riding in the 1650m Ruby Handicap on Sunday and handed him a 2-day suspension, Prebble informed them that he had been asked to ride Dao Dao in Melbourne on the weekend and they agreed to defer his suspension until after the Caulfield race.

The 1600m Futurity Stakes is not only one of the most prestigious races in Australia, but it also marks the first leg of the Asian Mile Challenge which is made up of amongst others the Champions Mile in Hong Kong on April 25. Hence Prebble would love to win on Dao Dao in Australia and again in Hong Kong.

However, Dao Dao is no stranger to the cosmopolitan Asian city having raced in Hong Kong twice last year. His best effort then was a third place. However, now he is reportedly in top form which means he could well fare much better in Australia on Saturday as well as in Hong Kong in a couple of months.

Here are the 10 runners for the 2010 Futurity Stakes (Gr 1) at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday, February 27:

  1. Lord Tavistock
  2. Sniper's Bullet
  3. Typhoon Tracy
  4. Dao Dao
  5. Barbaricus
  6. Joku
  7. Extra Zero
  8. La Rocket
  9. Linton
  10. Aloha
