Pocket Power Can Finally Win Gold Challenge - 06-12-09
June 12 - In South Africa, a racehorse that has more than earned his reputation as one of the country's best runners is 6-year-old Pocket Power, who has won just about every major race in the nation, bar one, the R750,000 Gold Challenge (Gr 1), which he'll get another crack at tomorrow in Durban.
Under hopefully sunny skies tomorrow at the coastal city's popular Clairwood Racecourse, Pocket Power will go up against 10 other top-rated thoroughbreds in the prestigious 1600m weight-for-age turf race. However, as most punters will agree, Pocket Power just seems to be getting better with age.
In his most recent outing, for instance, last month he delivered a spectacular win in the 1450m Pinnacle Plate at this track. For most of the race he remained comfortably just off the pace in fifth place, until he entered the straight, when he switched gears to thunder past the leaders to cross the line first.
In the winners circle he didn't look as though he broke a sweat, which should bode well in tomorrow's outing. Another factor in Pocket Power's favor is the fact that unlike in his previous two Gold Challenge attempts, many of his biggest rivals will be absent tomorrow, including Jay Peg and Dancer's Daughter.
Instead, he'll go up against the likes of Kapil and River Jetez, both dangerous runners in their own right, but horses Pocket Power should have no trouble dispatching assuming he has a clean start. Buy And Sell and Our Giant will also enter the starting gate tomorrow, both of whom have shown good form.
These four horses will no doubt pose the biggest threat to Pocket Power, but there is a reason that he is South Africa's reigning Horse of the Year and was listed in the top 20 of last month's World Thoroughbred Rankings, sharing a 121 rating with Mine That Bird (USA), Rachel Alexandra (USA) and others.
According to Pocket Power's respected trainer, Mike Bass, just how well the horse runs in tomorrow's Gold Challenge will be an excellent indication of how well prepared he is for the Durban July Handicap.
