Pletcher Pins Hopes On Circular Quay - 03-06-08
March 6 - Todd Pletcher, winner of 4 consecutive Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Trainer of the Year is hoping for a win at the $500,000 New Orleans Handicap with Circular Quay this Saturday.
Circular Quay won last year's Louisiana Derby in a spectacular finish, but has not managed to keep up the momentum. After the Louisiana Derby, he finished 6th in the Kentucky Derby, 5th in the Preakness and 6th in the Virginia Derby. At the start of his 4-year-old season at Santa Anita this past February he finished 5th, but Pletcher says that he still has faith in him; believing that Circular Quay being more mature this season should be able to tap deeper into his innate talent. Pletcher also said that Circular Quay was holding his weight much better than before.
Pletcher is entering Magna Graduate, the winner of the Group 2 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs in the New Orleans Handicap as well.
He has horses in 3 other stakes races on the day too. He is entering Team Valor's King of the Roxy in the Duncan Kenner Stakes. King of the Roxy hasn't raced since last August, but Pletcher says that the vacation has "done a very tired horse a world of good" and that the horse, who was also a Triple Crown contender last year, has come back well.
Twilight Meteor is being sent out for the $500,000 Mervin Muniz and Chagall and Iron Lips are being sent out for the $100,000 Bienville. This is Iron Lips' first race outside France and she is one of the antepost betting favorites for the race.
