Pletcher Hoping for Win in Mother Goose Stakes - 06-25-10
June 25 - Tomorrow (Saturday, June 26) one of America's top race horse trainers, Todd Pletcher, turns 43, and what better way to for him to celebrate than to rack up a win in the $250,000 Mother Goose Stakes (Gr 1) in New York.
And the odds are good that Pletcher will pull off a victory in the 1 1/16 mile race for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont Park, when you consider he's entered three of the five runners in the race including overwhelming favourite Devil May Care.
His other two charges are Ailalea and Katy Now. And while most punters at Belmont will no doubt bet a buck or two on Devil May Care who will break from barrier 3, second favourite Ailalea is no slouch, being a multiple stakes winner.
As for Katy Now, she may have a promising career ahead of her and is capable of delivering a 'break out' performance in the Mother Goose Stakes. The remaining two non-Todd Pletcher runners are Biofuel and Connie and Michael.
Said Pletcher earlier this week about his choice to run three fillies in the Mother Goose, 'In a perfect world I wouldn't run all these fillies in the same race against each other, as it's not effective stable management from my perspective.
'On the other hand, I think it's what the owners want to do, it's a Gr 1 race, it's at home, and those things are attractive,' said the trainer who's no stranger to the Mother Goose having won it with Jersey Girl (1998) and Octave (2007).
Despite its small field, the Mother Goose Stakes has attracted top New York jockeys like John Velazquez (Devil May Care), Edgar Prado (Ailalea), Kent Desormeaux (Katy Now), Eurico Da Silva (Biofuel) and Rajiv Maragh (Connie and Michael).
Here is the complete field and odds for the 2010 Mother Goose Stakes (Gr 1) at Belmont Park on Saturday:
- Biofuel (KY) 5/1
- Ailalea (KY) 3/1
- Devil May Care (KY) 6/5
- Connie and Michael (KY) 7/2
- Katy Now (KY) 8/1
