Pick Six at Belmont Park tops $1 Million - 10-22-08
October 22 - Horseracing fans in New York state will be drooling at the news that because the pick six bet at Belmont Park has eluded punters since Sunday, it has reached a gargantuan $1,019,102 ahead of today's full race card at this top-rated horse racing venue.
Today marks the first time since June this year that the pick six has topped the million dollar mark, and there is little doubt that serious horseracing fans in and around New York will be ready to place a wager or two for shot at their share of the pick six total.
Race 4 - over seven furlongs on turf - will see a field of 12 start, six of which are first-timers. This means punters should be cautious betting on any of the two-years-old before the bookies have laid odds on them. That said, keep an eye on the experienced Master and Distant Strike. However, Cross the Divide and Caffe D' Oro should not be ignored.
Race 5 - over six furlongs on turf - will see 12 maiden claimers vying for the $75,000 prize pool. In this race there are a number of horses that should be capable of delivering the goods, not least of whom is Kaleidoscope Sky, Amber's Edge, Wait It Out and Southern Princess. It will be interesting to see if trainer Jimmy Ryerson picks Fancy Asset or Got That Money to run.
Race 6 - over seven furlongs on turf - for restricted claiming fillies and mares should showcase some good speed and stamina. Punters should watch out for Tempest Storm who notched up an impressive victory over a mile recently. However, neither Smart Gabrielle nor One in a Romp should not be discounted. For our money Classic Love could prove to be as dangerous over seven furlongs as she is over six.
Race 7 - a 1 1/16-mile bottom-level claimer on turf - could be a tough one to call. Most likely the horses that break earliest will be the ones to watch, particularly Leadwithyourchin who drew the rail. However, T Harry - under the able guidance of Tony Dutrow - has proved himself over turf as has The Shaughraun (renowned for closing deep). We think Hawkinsville is worth a wager though.
Race 8 - over seven furlongs on turf - should be a big proving ground for the 11 local fillies, none of which have attempted the distance over turf before. That said, Doree Daze and Mesa Girl grabbed our attention as possible victors. Although - for punters choosing to play it safe - perhaps Who Is Lady may have that winning form, despite starting from the outside post. Don't ignore John's Jean either.
Race 9 - over six furlongs on dirt - should offer up some excitement, especially considering that four of these low-end two-year-old maiden sprinters have produced Beyers figures in the 40s. It will be interesting to see which of his two entries Rick Dutrow chooses to run - Beauty by George or My Cruiser. Of course Angel Aly and Larcenous Lady could well pull wins out of the bag today.
