The Phoenix Stakes is an Irish flat horse race that is raced over 1207 meters (6 furlongs) each August. Two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies are able to enter and the purse is ?75000.
The original home of the race was the Phoenix Park racecourse located in Dublin, however when the course was closed in 1991 the race was moved to Leopardstown. It was moved again in 2002 to its current venue, the Curragh.
The race has been won by some top-class horses in the past with George Washington standing out amongst the most recent winners. |

The Curragh racectrack is situated on the Curragh plain which is in County Kildare, Ireland and is Ireland's most prestigious thoroughbred racecourse. The first race on the Curragh plain was run in 1727, with the first Derby being run in 1866. It was declared a horse training and racing facility by parliament in 1868. The Curragh is host to all 5 of the Irish classics. |

The Curragh racecourse is horseshoe shaped and is right-handed. There are various training facilities at the course and the new course capacity is 50 000. The Curragh is currently undergoing an ?100 million refurbishment project aiming to catapult it into one of the most prestigious racing venues in Europe. |
