Paul Nicholls

Paul Nicholls was born in Alveston, Bristol, England on 17 April 1962.

Born to the son of a policeman, Nicholls began his career in horse racing as a jump jockey, twice winning the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury, once riding Broadheath in 1986 and then on Playschool in 1987.

For the period between 1980 and 1989, during his profession as a jockey, Nicholls partnered 130 winners, many of those being for David Barons, with whom he was to become the assistant trainer.

In November 1991, after his apprenticeship with David Barons, he took out his horse training license and is now a British National Hunt horse trainer and former jockey with the stables at Ditcheat, Somerset, winning the British jump racing Champion Trainer title in both the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.

Nicholls began making his mark in the circle of trainers, when, in 1998, he saddled seven wins and three seconds from 10 runs, and then saddling six wins on the same card in 2006 at Wincanton. He followed 1998 by taking the key runs on all three days of the 1999 Cheltenham Festival, with Flagship Uberalles on the Tuesday, Call Equiname on the Wednesday, and most importantly, See More Business on the Thursday, totaling 16 Festival winners.

Topping off his wins in 1999, Nicholls was awarded the title of most successful trainer at The Festival, and followed this achievement in 2004 and 2006.

Nicholls has proven that even though he may be one of the "new kids on the block", he is a definite contender to his fellow trainers, and has his sights set on becoming the ultimate champion in the arena of horse trainers. He's constructed his stables, and built up an empire to rival the most experienced of competitors.
