Our Lukas

Our Lukas has Weighted chance in Caloundra Cup - 06-29-10

June 29 - Our Lukas, as one of Australia's most formidable stayers, will have his work cut out for him on Saturday, when he'll be carrying his biggest weight to date (58kg) in the $200,000 Caloundra Cup at Sunshine Coast Turf Club.

So far this has been a tremendous winter campaign for Our Lukas, and one which his connections, including his respected trainer Robert Heathcote, would like to see concluded with an impressive victory in Saturday's 2400m outing.

Said Heathcote this week, 'The handicappers have said that he will carry 58 kilograms, and while that is a decent weight to carry, I think he is up to it. As long as the track isn't like last it was last year [sloppy], he'll be going around.'

The six-year-old gelding went into last year's Caloundra Cup as the favourite, but any chance he had at a chalking up a victory was scuppered by a muddy track as a result of heavy rainfall. 'It was a quagmire that day,' said Heathcote.

But that was then, and provided the Sunshine Coast track stays dry, the gelding should be a real contender judging by his recent form. For instance, just last week Our Lukas notched up his second consecutive win in the Ipswich Cup.

And if Our Lukas pulls off a win on Saturday, he'll make it into the record books for carrying the biggest weight of any previous Caloundra Cup winner. That said, he'll face stiff competition if the other entries are anything to go by.

These include Ekstreme, who placed in the Brisbane Cup, as well as Indikator, who placed in the recent Tattersall's Cup, and NSW stayers, Lang and Ironstein and Lang, and NSW gallopers, How Much My Love and Mr Unforgettable.
