The Oak Leaf Stakes is an
American Grade 1 flat horse race for thoroughbred two-year-old fillies,
and is run on the dirt track at Santa Anita Park in California in late
September each year as part of its Oak Tree Meeting. With a $250,000
purse the Oak Leaf Stakes is prep race for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile
Fillies.
As far as highlights go in the Oak Leaf Stakes there
have been many over the years. In 1970 Clement L. Hirsch's juvenile
filly June Darling won the Oak Leaf Stakes, while in 1978 It's In the
Air won the race by 1 1/2-lengths and went on to be named co-winner of
American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly.
In 1979 Bold 'n Determined
won the Oak Leaf Stakes by three lengths, keeping her undefeated record
intact. The race was won in 1982 Landaluce, while in 1983 Life's Magic
beat out her stable mate Althea (who went on to win that year's American
Champion Two-Year-Old Filly).
1988 saw top-rated trainer D. Wayne
Lukas celebrate his sixth Oak Leaf Stakes victory (out of seven runs)
with One of a Klein. Three years later in 1991, Pleasant Stage scored
her maiden victory in the Oak Leaf Stakes before going on to win the
coveted Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Trainer Bob Baffert tied
a 14-year-old record in 1997 for most victories in an Oak Tree Meeting,
when 19 of his charges proved victorious that year including Oak Leaf
Stakes winner, Vivid Angel.
More recently, in 2003 Halfbridled
celebrated a victory in both the Oak Leaf Stakes and the Breeders' Cup
Juvenile Fillies and was subsequently named American Champion
Two-Year-Old Filly for that year. |
