The Norfolk Stakes is an
American Grade 1 flat horse race for thoroughbred two-years-old on dirt.
With a purse of $250,000, the Norfolk Stakes is run over 1 1/16 miles at
Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California every year as part of the Oak
Tree Racing Association meeting, usually in late September or
thereabouts.
Inaugurated in 1970, the Norfolk Stakes started out
as a Grade 1 event but was downgraded to a Grade 2 event in the late
1990s. However, being part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge 'Win and
You're In' series, the American Graded Stakes Committee returned the
Norfolk Stakes to its former Grade 1 status in 2007.
Winners of
the Norfolk Stakes automatically qualify for that year's $2 million
Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Since its inception no horse has ever won the
Norfolk Stakes more than once. However, Panamanian-born jockey Alex
Solis has won the race six times - most recently in 2008
aboard Street Hero.
One notable winner of the Norfolk Stakes was
Free House - a horse that has often been described as one of the best
California-bred horses of all time - who won the Norfolk Stakes in 1996
and then went on to win a host of other major races.
These
include the San Felipe Stakes in 1997, the Santa Anita Derby in 1997,
the Swaps Stakes in 1997, the Bel Air Handicap in 1998, the Pacific
Classic Stakes in 1998, the Santa Anita Handicap in 1999 and the San
Antonio Handicap in 1999. |
