New Dubai Racetrack Will Open Next Year - 03-01-08
March 1 - Sheikh Mohammed, ruler of Dubai, has promised to increase prize monies across the board once the new Meydan racecourse is open.
He appeared bemused at official claims from Britain that prize money was of no importance to racehorse owners. He said that he wanted to make the winning of a race an exceptionally special occasion for the racehorse owner and felt that more prize money was a lot more appealing than merely collecting a trophy.
In Dubai, racing prize money is already high and many owners - from Britain, South Africa and Ireland amongst others - are sending their horses to be raced and trained there during the winter. This has had an impact on the resale value of horses with a handicap of between 90 and 100 and means that more "twilight zone" horses have stayed in training instead of being sold to America or Hong Kong.
The Meydan racecourse set to open towards the end of 2009 and looks set to take Dubai horse racing to levels quite unforeseen a decade or so ago. The racecourse is estimated to cost in the region of a billion pounds (or depending on the source; a billion dollars) and will include a luxury hotel, high end restaurants and a museum. A 10,000 bay covered parking lot is also on the cards.
