My Princess Jess has a Shot in Mrs Revere Stakes - 11-07-08
November 7 - Top-rated racehorse trainer Barclay Tagg - who is no stranger to Kentucky's Churchill Downs Racecourse, as the racing venue where his charge Funny Cide surprised everyone in 2003 by winning the Kentucky Derby - is back do to battle in tomorrow's Mrs. Revere Stakes (Gr 2).
The New York-based trainer will be showcasing his filly My Princess Jess in the $175,000 Mrs. Revere Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs. He'll surely be hoping to repeat his victory in the turf race in 2007, when Bit of Whimsy - ridden to perfection by Javier Castellano - crossed the line first.
However, unlike Bit of Whimsy who won the Mrs. Revere Stakes after coming off a victory in the 2007 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (Gr 1), My Princess Jess could only manage a third in the same race this year which was run just down the road at Keeneland Race Course near Lexington, Kentucky.
Said Tagg, 'We figured that since My Princess Jess didn't run to badly in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup that we would give her a go in tomorrow's Mrs. Revere Stakes. It also made sense because it gave us our last shot to run her against straight three-year-old fillies on the turf, and has a nice purse.'
Fans of Tagg and My Princess Jess will be not be ecstatic to hear that she will set off tomorrow in a field of 11 fillies from the far outside post, the same position she started from in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. However in that race she finished a not-too-bad 1 and 1/2 lengths behind winner, Alwajeeha.
'I am not thrilled with the position she drew, being that I think it cost her some in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, but I believe that if she shows the kind of form I know she is capable, she could be in with a real shot tomorrow. Two Mrs. Revere Stakes winners in two years would be great.,' said Tagg.
My Princess Jess along with Acoma are the current race favorites, although punters are also advised to keep an eye out for Raw Silk, another New York-based runner; Seemingly, a recent Keeneland allowance winner; and Scolara, who after nearly five months off managed a fourth in the recent Valley View.
