Murtagh Lands Fallon's Plum Coolmore Job - 01-30-08
January 30 - Kieren Fallon may well be remembered as a wasted talent in the history of horse racing, an amazing accomplishment when you consider that he has won a bushel of championships and won so many big races. But he could have done so much more if not for the self-destructive bent to his nature. His latest ban for cocaine abuse means that Johnny Murtagh gets the chance of a lifetime to be the stable jockey for Coolmore.
The Coolmore operation owned by Magnier, Tabor, and Smith is one of the most powerful in world operation duking it out with Godolphin for top honours. The horses are trained by Aidan O'Brien and usually ridden equally expertly by Fallon. Now it will be Murtagh's job and his to lose one feels. It would surprise us if Fallon ever rides for Coolmore again.
The reason for this is that Murtagh is coming into his own as one of the top flight jockeys in the world. Provided he maintains this standard there is no reason to expect Coolmore to go back to Fallon when his latest ban is done some time in 2009.
Murtagh is no stranger to riding for O'Brien or Coolmore but never on a regular basis like this. He won the Epsom Derby for the O'Brien trained High Chaparral back in 2002. One feels that more classic victories are imminent.
