Mr. Hot Stuff Unlikely Tip For Belmont Stakes - 05-27-09
May 27 - This is indeed the question that many punters will no doubt be asking themselves ahead of next month's 1 1/2 mile $1 million Belmont Stakes (Gr 1) in New York, the third and final leg of the U.S. Triple Crown, despite the fact that Mr. Hot Stuff is still eligible for a first-level allowance.
You see, like two previous Belmont Stakes winners - Jazil and Da' Tara - Mr. Hot Stuff has not had much experience in the winners circle, having only won one race out of eight starts. But like Jazil and Da' Tara, he has shown more than enough potential in his career so far to pull off a victory.
Or so believes his trainer, Eoin Harty, who is hoping the three-year-old colt will deliver a dazzling run in the race on June 6 at Belmont Park Racecourse in Elmont, New York. Although he didn't rate in the Kentucky Derby, Mr. Hot Stuff came third in the Sham Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby.
Known for calling a spade a spade, said Harty ahead of the Belmont Stakes, 'I thought he did deplorably in the Derby. He was back early on, which I was quite happy about. He made a mild move, and that was it. I don't want to blame the track, but he had never been on an off track before.'
Despite finishing 15th in the Kentucky Derby, Harty kept Mr. Hot Stuff on in Kentucky, where he has been putting the colt through his paces on Keeneland Racecourse's synthetic surface. Yesterday morning, the trainer worked the thoroughbred over five furlongs in a time of 1:01.
Said Harty's assistant, Brian Ange, after the early morning work at Keeneland, 'It's been so steamy here, but this morning it was beautiful for the first two or three hours. He finished up the work in great shape. He came the final three-eighths in 35 seconds, in company, and finished up nice.'
Many would say that it would be a nice end to the Triple Crown if a longshot like Mr. Hot Stuff crossed the line first, especially after jockey Calvin Borel caused the upset of the century by winning this year's Kentucky Derby aboard rank outsider Mine That Bird, who went into the race at 50-1.
